The Morning Wire — Friday, October 2, 2026

In this issue:

  • The Frontier Waste playbook is being run again. Blue Sage Capital, which grew Frontier Waste Solutions before GFL bought it for $900 million, launched Blue Castle Waste Solutions and has already acquired three independent haulers in Iowa and Minnesota, with Frontier founder John Gustafson on its board.

  • Commodity pricing. Bale prices held steady all week, fiber is still slowly rising, aluminum remains the most valuable material at nearly a dollar a pound, and plastics are at or near bottom prices.

  • Regional fuel prices. Diesel fell in almost every region for the week of September 28, though prices are still more than $2.50 a gallon above last year, with the next EIA update due Monday, October 5.

  • Mergers & acquisitions. Ecowaste Solutions began collecting for more than 22,000 households in Columbia County, Florida, Vanguard Renewables closed on five anaerobic digesters in New York and Ontario, and GFL named former SECURE CEO Allen Gransch as chief operating officer.

  • Franchise & contract watch. Fort Worth signed with Archaea Energy to build a renewable natural gas plant at its city landfill, which the city expects to bring in $2.5 million to $5 million a year toward future solid waste planning.

  • Open RFPs. Yavapai County posted two transfer station hauling bids, Paulden due October 15 and Bagdad due November 19, and the Fort Bliss refuse and recycling solicitation closes today.

  • Industry headlines. A World Wildlife Fund and SC Johnson study found a single national EPR law could cut local government waste costs by 49% to 53%, Albuquerque's Cerro Colorado Landfill returned to normal hours, and a new report put recoverable minerals in old cell phones at up to $2.2 billion.
